But one thing&#8217;s for sure &#8211; now&#8217;s the time to prepare your company and its employees <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on your business&#8217;s health<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coronavirus outbreak<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronavirus Disease, officially known as COVID-19, has been all over the headlines for the past few weeks. As we now approach the three-month mark since the first reports, the spread of coronavirus continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point in time, the WHO has stated that there are over 100,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus around the world. In the USA alone there have been more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/08\/world\/coronavirus-news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases reported to the CDC, a number that continues to grow. 4 states have even declared a state of emergency and some officials are talking about regional lockdowns &#8211; though nothing is for certain at this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Okay, let\u2019s all take a deep breath and relax.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We aren\u2019t here to fan the flames of panic by any means &#8211; there\u2019s plenty of that happening already. As the saying goes, \u201cThis too shall pass.\u201d The current advice from government health officials is to wash your hands, limit physical contact, and keep traveling to a minimum. In particular, the entertainment, hospitality and service industries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/14\/economy\/coronavirus-china-economy-small-businesses\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent study,<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33%<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Chinese companies surveyed feel they&#8217;ll only be able to survive for a month with the funds they currently have at hand. These statistics are quite concerning, especially considering that more than 60% of China\u2019s GDP is generated by the 30 million small-and-medium-sized businesses in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">How will this affect the USA?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may still be saying, \u201cCoronavirus is a China problem, what\u2019s that got to do with the USA?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about this: more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/countries-regions\/china-mongolia-taiwan\/peoples-republic-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-fifth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the United States\u2019 total imports come from China, amounting to more than <em>half a trillion dollars<\/em> in 2018 alone. But that doesn\u2019t mean that there\u2019s no way to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on small business health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a short summary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/specific-groups\/guidance-business-response.html\">steps the CDC recommends<\/a> taking to reduce the impact of coronavirus on small business stability:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Encourage sick employees to stay home.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first and most obvious step to limit the impact of coronavirus on your small business is to keep sick employees out of the workplace. Sending ailing employees home should not require official confirmation of coronavirus, or even a doctor\u2019s note.
